How to take your own Ireland Passport offline photo

When applying for an Irish passport by post with a paper form, you must submit four identical printed photos, two of which must be signed and stamped on the back by your identity witness. Ireland's Passport Service accepts printed photos measuring between 35 × 45 mm and 38 × 50 mm.

1. Frame your shot from the top of your head to your mid-torso

Stand in front of a plain white, cream, or light-gray wall in even lighting. Have someone take a photo of you (from the top of your head to your mid-torso), leaving clear margin space around your head and shoulders. Face the camera with a neutral expression; clear prescription glasses may be worn as long as there is no lens glare and the frames do not obscure your eyes.

2. Upload and crop while preserving margin space

Upload your ID photo to format it to official Irish passport dimensions (35 × 45 mm to 38 × 50 mm), making sure to keep visible margin space around your head and upper shoulders — tight close-ups that cut off the torso are rejected by the Passport Service.

3. Print four identical copies on photo paper

Print four identical copies at high resolution on photo-quality paper with a plain white, unglazed back so your witness can sign it cleanly. Because portraits are printed onto the passport in black and white, the Passport Service recommends black-and-white photos, though full-color prints are also accepted. Photos must be taken within six months of your application.

For infants and young children who cannot sit upright on their own, the Irish Passport Service recommends laying the child flat on a plain white sheet or blanket and taking the photo from directly above.
