Government Passport Photo Requirements

Adhering to all passport and visa requirements is important. Below are some of the specifications you will need to follow:

prize-icon

Technical requirements if you are going to process the photo yourself through Photoshop or other services:

Dimensions

While the measurements required for legal identification images are usually 2x2 inches or 50x50 mm, some countries may require different dimensions.

Color

To comply with most guidelines, the image cannot be in black and white, it must be in color. The colors should look natural and not be too bright or saturated.

Format

Digital portraits should usually be in JPEG format, and the physical ones must be glossy. Some countries accept matte-finish ones, too.

Size

The file should typically be between 50 KB and 10 MB. The exact size will depend on what your country has specified.

Compression

Photos should not be compressed more than a ratio of 20:1. Compression beyond this limit can make them look blurry or pixelated.

TIPS, FOR TAKING SELFIES

How to Take a Passport Picture with a Phone

We understand that you want the best result for your snapshot in the fewest attempts. So, here are some expert tips to keep in mind:

phone-icon

Equipment

Use your smartphone’s back camera because it takes higher-quality close-ups than the front one. Make sure your phone’s lens is clean and not scratched. Maintain a distance of 4-6 feet from the camera.

background-svg

Background

Find a plain background color like a white or light-colored wall. Make sure there are no patterns or shadows, and stand about 2 feet away from it.

light-svg

Lighting

Good lighting is key to a great passport picture. Stand facing a window for the best results. If you can’t access natural light indoors - use bright, even lighting to avoid shadows on your face.

facial-svg

Posing Tips and Facial Features

Maintain an upright posture, look straight at the camera, and keep a neutral facial expression. This means you should not smile or frown; keep your eyes open and mouth closed.

Taking the Photo — What to Wear & Hair Rules

While our AI passport photo maker tool adjusts for some clothing discrepancies, below are the main rules you need to follow:

ok-icon

Do:

  • Wear everyday clothes in solid colors and avoid patterns.
  • Keep your hair back so that your full face is visible.
  • Wear religious clothing if it’s part of your everyday look. However, make sure your forehead, ears, and neck are visible.
  • Choose colors that contrast with the backdrop.
invalid-svg

Don’t:

  • Wear white clothes if the background is white.
  • Wear hats or head coverings unless for religious reasons.
  • Wear spectacles, sunglasses, or tinted lenses.
  • Wear heavy makeup or jewelry that covers your face.
  • Choose clothes with logos or text visible.

Taking Passport Pics of Babies

Capturing a passport or ID photo of an infant can be tricky but we’ve got some suggestions for you:

  • Pick a moment when your baby's awake and attentive.
  • Position the baby on a surface. Make sure their head is straight.
  • Use a toy or someone to grab their attention to take several straight facing photos.
  • Avoid any interfering things on a photo, such as hands of a person if someone is holding a baby, pacifiers or toys.

How to Print Passport Size Photos at CVS, Walgreens or at Home

You can upload your photo to CVS or Walgreens photo services and pick up professional prints the same day. Alternatively, print at home using a color printer and high-quality photo paper by selecting the 2x2 inch format and setting the print scale to 100%.

  • Download your portrait from our website after processing.
  • Open the file on your computer or phone and select the number of copies you want printed.
  • Choose “Print” from your device’s menu options.
  • Select the paper type in your device settings for the best quality. Make sure the measurements are set to 4x6 inches with no margins.
  • Click “Print” and wait for the print to come out.
  • Carefully cut out the AI-generated passport photo using scissors or a paper cutter.

Printer settings & DPI checklist:

  • Paper size: 4 × 6 inch, “Actual Size / 100 %”
  • Glossy photo paper at 300–600 DPI
  • Turn off auto-colour corrections – you want a pure-white background.

Passport, Visa, and ID Photos - Common Mistakes

To avoid unnecessary hassle, there are some common issues that you need to be aware of:

  • A busy backdrop instead of a plain one.
  • A file with poor resolution.
  • Hair covering parts of the face.
  • An image with a smile or other expression /with no gap between the head and the margins on the top and the sides.
  • A portrait that’s too old. It should be recent.
  • Shadows on the face or background.
  • A copy with incorrect dimensions.

About PhotoGov

PhotoGov is an advanced artificial intelligence-powered tool for creating perfect images quickly and easily at home. We help people generate flawless shots for various types of ID cards and permits by following all the rules for different countries. Our passport AI free software lets you create images for more than 1,000 types of documents.

Make Passport Size photo online Free

Yes, you can produce your passport photos online for more than 480 types of documents absolutely free, including passports, visas, ID cards, and so on. Our collection of the documents we can help you with is on the increase.

Moreover, when particular documents are in demand, a significant number of users are to engage in the photo generating process at the same time. This results in the artificial intelligence servers being overworked, which results in free processing times being delayed.

On the legal side, and in order not to violate any laws, we have decided to provide some document types as priority services and at a small fee — from $2.90 to $6.90 per photo. This way, it is still up to 3 times less expensive than using traditional photo studios and up to 2 times less expensive than buying most photo apps and software.
