Lighting & Background: Position yourself 3–6 feet (1–2 meters) in front of a plain, light-colored wall facing a natural light source to ensure even, shadow-free illumination across your face.

Eyeglasses: Remove all eyewear. The U.S. Department of State strictly prohibits glasses in visa and passport photos, except in rare medical cases supported by a signed doctor's statement.

Camera Setup: Mount your smartphone on a tripod or have someone take the photo at direct eye level. Disable portrait mode, software blur, and beauty filters.

Posing: Look straight into the lens with eyes open, mouth closed, and a neutral expression, keeping your head and shoulders centered in the frame.

Note on Immigrant Visas: The U.S. consulates in Hong Kong and the U.S. Embassy in Turkey require two identical, unretouched photographs taken within the past 6 months against a plain white background.
