A 1x1-inch photo has a square aspect ratio, but not every image with a 1:1 aspect ratio has 1-inch sides. The term “1:1 picture” can simply mean the photo is square; its sides are equal, but they aren’t 1 inch each. For instance, a common 2x2 format is also a 1:1 picture, because its width and height are equal.

PWD and Senior Citizen ID requirements vary by municipality; applicants must verify exact specifications with their local office. Certain Philippine documents require a different format: for example, passport photos are taken on-site, and dual citizenship applications processed through the embassy in Washington, D.C., accept two 2" × 2" photos.

Several official documents require a larger square format: the 2x2 inch (51x51 mm) photograph. This size applies to U.S. passports and visas, as well as Philippine dual citizenship applications and the secondary photograph on a PWD ID. A 2x2 inch photo is exactly twice the width and height of a 1x1 picture.

If an application lists both formats, each file must be processed separately.

Stand against a plain white or light wall, facing a window for even lighting.

Hold the smartphone at eye level or have someone else take the photo. Disable filters and portrait mode.

Look directly at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed and eyes open.

Keep the head and shoulders in the frame. The small 1x1 crop requires a sharp image of the face.
